Top five men, women to look out for in Joburg2024 FISU Squash Championship



International players, officials and delegates have landed in Johannesburg for the 2024 FISU World University Championship Squash at Parkview and Wanderers with visible excitement to everyone involved. Action will unfold on the squash courts between Monday, 2 and Saturday, 7 September, and the top performing men and women in this tournament have assembled at Southern Sun Rosebank Hotel before heading to the University of Johannesburg for the Opening Ceremony on Sunday.

Here are the top five women to look out for in court:

− Marta Dominguez from Vigo, Spain – ranked 61st in the world, Domingues has participated in four finals, winning two titles. With a 173 height and 60kg weight, she is well−built for the sport and will be a strong contender in the women’s section come.

− Cheng Nga Ching from Hong Kong – the 24−year−old is ranked 65th in the world and has won five titles from 11 finals. She is also one of the strong contenders having won 61 matches, losing 41 out of 102 matches around the world.

− Helena Coetzee from Pretoria, South Africa – the 23−year−old South African is ranked 241st in the world. She is one of the four South African ladies selected to compete for top honours in the championship. With four years in the sport, she won five and lost four matches in her international career.

− Wai Yhann Au Yeong from Singapore – Ranked 88th in the world, the 25−year−old Yeong is one of the tiny in body size players, but highly talented with 12 titles from 15 finals. Weighting 51kg and at 1.53m height, she boasts seven years of professional experience in squash.

− Ching Hei Fung from Hong Kong − Ranked 95th in the world, Fung played 69 matches, winning 34 and losing 35. She boasts two titles from 4 finals.

Top five male players to challenge for podium finishes:

− Macéo Levy from France – He is currently ranked 137. Levy started playing professionally since age 17. The 21−year−old won 2 titles from four finals. At 1.80m tall and weighting 76kg, he is a true challenger having played 64 matches, winning 27 and losing 37.

− Leo Chung from Hong Kong – Ranked, 132nd in the world, the 24−year−old played 98 matches, won 49 and lost 49 since he started competing professionally five years ago.

− Suraj Kumar Chand from Kalyan, Mumbai, India – Ranked 165th, the 23−year−old has thus far won five titles from nine finals. He played 29 matches, won 21 and lost 8. He is 1.65m tall.

− Ondrej Vorlícek from Teplice, Czechia – Ranked 149th, the 24−year−old is one of the players to challenge for a podium finish having won 11 titles from 18 finals. His height gives him a good advantage at 1.85m tall.

− Diodivine Meluleki Mkhize from South Africa – Mkhize is ranked 475th in the world at 19−years−old, He has played six matches, winning and losing three.
