Top talent ready for FISU World University Championship Squash in JHB

As anticipation builds, elite squash players representing over 14 countries across six continents are set to compete in the highly anticipated FISU World University Championship Squash, scheduled for 2 to 8 September 2024. The University of Johannesburg Sport (UJ Sport) and University Sport South Africa (USSA), in collaboration with the Federation of International University Sport (FISU), are diligently preparing to welcome players, technical officials, and dignitaries to this global sporting extravaganza.
Confirmed participants include Australia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, China, Hungary, Iran, India, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland and Uganda, with more nations to be revealed at the close of registration. Anticipating a surge in registrations before the deadline, organizers are gearing up for a truly international showdown.
The championship kicks off with the grand opening ceremony at the University’s Arts Theatre on 1 September 2024. From 2 to 8 September, the Parkview Squash Centre and the Wanderers Squash Club will witness intense singles and doubles squash action, setting the stage for a thrilling competition.
Expressing the institution’s readiness, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, Vice−Chancellor and Principal of UJ, remarked, "UJ has done its utmost to prepare for this event and is ready to welcome the world in the vibrant City of Gold." He highlighted UJ’s sporting prowess, offering a platform for talent to shine in provincial, national, and global competitions.
Professor Mpedi emphasized the championship’s role in showcasing the caliber of players and coaches in this formidable sport. "In September, participants will have a chance to experience all that Johannesburg has to offer as they immerse themselves in the heart of the city," he added.
USSA President, Mr. Matsobane Lewatle Jerry Laka, emphasised the transformative power of sports, stating, "The 2024 FISU World University Championship Squash is not just a platform for competition; it is a golden opportunity for you to showcase your prowess, learn valuable lessons from your peers, and create bonds and connections that transcend the boundaries of the court."
With under 100 days until the championship’s commencement, individual and team player registrations are still open. Supported by sponsors and partners including World Squash Federation, FISU, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, USSA, UJ, SASCOC, Squash South Africa, National Lotteries Commission, and the Federation of Africa University Sport, the championship promises to be a resounding success, bringing young, talented athletes to the global stage.
