FISU, World Squash give Joburg2024 the nod

Johannesburg, 13 March 2024

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) and World Squash have expressed their approval of Joburg 2024’s preparations during the initial inspection visit for the upcoming 2024 FISU World University Championship Squash, scheduled for 2−8 September 2024.

Mr. Juan Carlos Holgado, FISU Sports Director, Ms. Zena Wooldridge, President of World Squash Federation and Ms. Shonisani Masutha, FISU’s Regional Events Coordinator for Africa, conducted a thorough evaluation of tournament facilities, accommodation, travel logistics, and digital platforms.

The championship is set to unfold across multiple venues, including the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Parkview Squash Centre, and the Wanderers Squash Club.

The delegation, accompanied by Squash South Africa’s National General Manager, Ms. Jennifer Swayer, engaged with the local organizing committee at UJ’s School of Tourism and Hospitality. The committee showcased its plans, encompassing digital marketing materials, transportation logistics, and accommodation details for the championship.

Notable stops during the visit included Squash South Africa’s offices, Nelson Mandela Square, Southern Sun Sandton and the UJ Arts Theatre − the designated venue for the opening ceremony.

Impressed by the progress made, Mr. Holgado stated, "The venues are perfect for a global championship, and I believe that Joburg will be able to put together a successful event."

The delegation was presented with the championship’s official website, logo, graphics, and branding materials, along with travel arrangements for international guests. Ms. Wooldridge emphasized the importance of easy accessibility to information, stating, “From what we have seen, almost all the necessary requirements are covered by the organising committee. When teams arrive in Johannesburg at the O.R. Tambo International Airport, traveling to the hotel and the squash courts, the plan is well thought out. Participants should easily find all relevant details on the website for registration, activities in Johannesburg, venues, travel itineraries, and required official documents."

Joburg 2024 has already disseminated Bulletin One in February 2024, providing comprehensive details about the event.

Ms. Nomsa Mahlangu, Chairperson of the Joburg 2024 Local Organising Committee and Senior Director of UJ Sport, remarked, “ We are pleased to host the FISU and World Squash delegation and appreciate the opportunity to give them confidence in our preparations," underscoring the committee’s commitment to ensuring a seamless championship experience.

Joburg 2024 looks forward to hosting a world−class Championship, uniting participants and spectators in the spirit of international sportsmanship and excellence.
